Looking for a New Challenge?

NGO Shoulder 2 Shoulder (S2S), a Christian development organization in Kenya, is seeking a Project Coordinator to contribute long-term to our projects for children and youth.

Kenya: Serving, Sharing, Supporting

S2S is a Christian NGO dedicated to supporting children and youth in Kenya through sustainable, community-driven projects. Rooted in faith, we aim to be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing hope, dignity, and lasting change. We are looking for a Project Coordinator who feels called to walk alongside local communities. The goal is to be deeply involved in our projects, build meaningful relationships, and share stories of God’s work with our sponsors and supporters.

Vacancy at a glance

  • Organization: NGO Shoulder 2 Shoulder
  • Location: Mombasa, Kenya
  • Target group: A driven Christian with a calling for missions and youth work
  • Commitment: A minimum of 2 years
  • Core role: Project monitoring, relationship management, local support, and translating impact into multimedia content for our supporters

What will you do as a Project Coordinator?

As a Project Coordinator, you are the essential link between the projects in the field and our supporters worldwide. You will visit the projects in person and document the transformed lives of children and youth.

Your activities will include:

  • Projects & Relationships: Visiting and monitoring project sites, as well as attending and supporting local meetings. You will work under the supervision of the local project manager, who carries the final responsibility. In the beginning, your focus will largely be on learning and understanding the local culture.
  • Communication: Writing newsletters, preparing sponsor reports, and taking photos and videos.
  • Support & Overview: Keeping the big picture in mind, you will support the team in intensively guiding traumatized youth in foster care and schools. You will actively collaborate and help steer challenging trajectories, ranging from tackling school absenteeism in the neighborhood to exploring safe opportunities for family reunification.
  • Ontwikkeling: After your onboarding period, you will prayerfully contribute to the strategic growth and development of the projects.

Where will you work?

You will be working in and around the coastal city of Mombasa and the surrounding region. S2S has several project locations where you will be active:

  • Mombasa (city & slums): This includes the Dickson Comprehensive School (a primary and nursery school in the Port Reitz slum) and various family homes (Dickson Children Centre) spread across Mombasa County.
  • Kikambala Located just north of Mombasa (along the highway to Malindi), you will find the Onesimus Good News Boys Centre, a residential and rehabilitation center for street boys.

Who are we looking for?

The core: Faith in action

You are a dedicated follower of Jesus Christ with a deep desire to live out and share your faith. You enjoy working closely with the local population, and you possess a flexible, relationship-oriented mindset.

Your profile:

  • Heart for youth: You have a warm heart for children and youth, backed by relevant experience in this field.
  • Vision: You have a clear vision of development work and fully align with the mission and vision of S2S.
  • Communication skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, including basic photography and video skills to capture stories of hope.
  • Personality: Self-motivated, flexible, and proactive. You are culturally sensitive and aware of the environment you will be working in.

Note: We highly recommend taking a short language course to learn basic Swahili. You can follow the course in Mombasa. This shows genuine interest in the local community and greatly helps in building connections.

Who will you work with?

You will work closely with our director, Matheka, who is based in the Netherlands. He visits Kenya twice a year and joins meetings online in the interim. Locally, you will primarily collaborate with the project manager and the team of social workers. You will also have regular contact with the headmaster and teachers of the Dickson Comprehensive School, as well as the foster mothers in the family homes.

What we offer

  • A meaningful opportunity to serve in God’s mission.
  • Direct involvement in life-changing work in Kenya.
  • Room for deep personal and spiritual growth.
  • Becoming part of a warm, international Christian network.
  • Housing support: Locally, we will help you find accommodation in a secure environment. Preference is typically given to a home in a gated estate in Nyali, which offers a relatively safe environment with good housing. The project locations themselves are in the slums and surrounding villages of Mombasa, all accessible by public transportation.

Financial basis: This is an unpaid missionary position. You are willing and able to build a personal support team (home front committee) for financial and prayer support.

Do you feel called to go and serve? We invite you to pray about this opportunity and get in touch with us!
